The Environmental Policy and Human Ecology Area of Emphasis is a PhD training program within the Graduate Group in Ecology at UC Davis. The mission of the Environmental Policy and Human Ecology AOE is to understand how the interaction among social, political, and environmental factors shapes human use of natural resources and human behavior more generally. There are three substantive themes within the EPHE:

  1. ecology, evolution, and society
  2. environmental politics and policy
  3. people and conservation

The interdisciplinary graduate training emphasizes integration of social and natural science theories, quantitative analysis of environmental problems and human behavior, and applications of scientific knowledge to environmental problems. EPHE considers a wide range of time scales, ranging from current public policies to the cultural evolution of human societies. The social science training of the EPHE combines with the ecological training of the Graduate Group in Ecology to provide a unique interdisciplinary perspective. Graduates of the EPHE receive a rigorous scientific training that prepares them for careers in academia, government, and the non-profit sector.
